We are delighted to confirm our three of our keynote speakers:
Dr. Sherman is Professor and Assistant Dean of Research at the University of Maryland, School of Nursing and Assistant Director of the Developing Centre for Excellence in Palliative Care Research. Dr. Sherman is also a member of the Palliative Care Consultation Service at the University of Maryland Medical Centre. In 2009, Dr. Sherman received the Hospice and Palliative Care Nurses Associations’ “Leading the Way Award,” which is the highest honour recognizing her implementation of the first Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner Program in the United States. Dr. Sherman also serves as faculty of Tenshi College in Hakkaido, Japan where she implemented Japan’s first Palliative Care Masters’ Program in Nursing.
Dr. Sherman’s education includes a diploma degree in nursing from Beth Israel School of Nursing, New York, a BSN from Mount Saint Mary’s College, Newburgh, New York, a masters’ degree from Pace University, Tarrytown, New York, a doctoral degree in nursing from New York University, and a post-masters’ certificate in adult health from New York University. She was awarded the Prestigious Project on Death in America Faculty Scholars Fellowship, funded by the Soros Foundation. Dr. Sherman served for seven years as the Co-director and faculty of the Bronx VA Medical Centre Interprofessional Palliative Care Fellowship Program.
Dr. Sherman received a Post-Doctoral AIDS Research Fellowship Award from the Aaron Diamond Foundation and has had two studies funded by the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Sherman has been faculty for the End of Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC), and served as a member of the steering committee in developing the National Consensus Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care. She is a member of several nursing and palliative care editorial boards and has published numerous data-based and other scholarly articles and books related to palliative care.
Professor Yates is jointly appointed as Professor of Nursing at Queensland University of Technology, and Director for Queensland Health’s Centre for Palliative Care Research and Education, a state-wide service that was established to enhance palliative care services in Queensland through education and research. As Director for the Centre, Patsy leads a range of programs focused on developing service capacity in palliative care, researching priority issues in palliative care, and strengthening the nexus between research, policy and practice.
Molly has extensive senior management and executive experience in both rural and metropolitan health services. She has a clinical and leadership background in palliative care nursing, counselling and education. Molly is the manager of the largest metropolitan palliative care consortium in Victoria and sits on a number of Victorian Department of Health advisory committees in addition to representing the sector in numerous policy and strategic development initiatives.
Molly regularly speaks about death and dying issues in the community, in the media and in the health and education sectors. A published author, her first book, ” Jelly Bean’s Secret”, published in 2005 has been used widely as a way of introducing the concept of death and grief to children and is being followed by a book for adolescents, “Sometimes Life Sucks” being published by Allen and Unwin in mid 2010.
Molly has embraced the use of the arts as a vehicle for empowering people to talk about death and grief in order to build informed, supportive communities. To this end, she collaborated with renowned Australian playwright, Alan Hopgood on the play “Four Funerals in One Day” which continues to tour to great public acclaim.
Molly was a recipient of a 2008 Churchill Fellowship and was recently awarded the inaugural Arts and Health Australia Award for Health Promotion. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing Australia, Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and Associate Fellow of the Australian College of Health Service Executives.
